We fish 99% standup fishing on the Mojo. We have Calstar rods, (the kind used on the long range boats out of California) with all roller guides. Multiple hookups are common on the boat, and having the flexibility of the standup rods on your side is a great advantage. We have the short 5'6" heavy rods made by Calstar. These are true "standup"rods. Don't let people fool you and hand you a chair rod and tell you to stand with it. Some boats will give you these back breakers. The long rods are made for the chair and should stay in the chair. We do have have chair rods. They are 130 lb. class. We use them mainly for the Giant Bluefin and Blue Marlin fishing.
Our reels are Duel, Penn, and Shimano. You will really love our 80 lb. and 130 lb. reels. These are the Duels. The cool feature about these reels is that you can turn the handles forward (the normal way), and this is the regular speed. If you turn the handle backward, that is low speed. No more pushing buttons and moving the reel handle in for low, and the opposite for high. You can instantly go from high to low or low to high, and not lose the fish switching gears. Most people think that reeling backwards would be awkward, but as soon as they try the reels on a tuna dogging below the boat, they love these rigs. Just turn the handle backwards and you can pull a tree stump with these dudes!
Our 130 lb. tackle is only fished out of the chair. These reels are also Duels, with the same reverse feature. Our fighting chair has an offset stanchion to aid in clearing the corners on a big fish. |
